Bigger badder and all that.

During the thirty or so years since the original run of BSG there's been debates about what a Battlestar's armament is. It's the same kinds of debates going on about other ships from sci-fi shows of that era, and there was never any official say on it (unlike Star Wars, for example). One school of thought assumes that the Pegasus was the only one armed with missiles, and different Battlestars had various configurations. I've emphasized Pegasus' armaments here (missiles), since I like the school of thought that all Battlestars are somehow individualized.

It's best to limit a battlestar's individualization to paint jobs- with a standard design, you have a design that's easier (and thus, cheaper) to mass-produce, meaning you can buy more battlestars and fully exploit the N-squared Law ([link]).

According to an earth mentality maybe, but these Battlestars were not meant to be mass produced. These were the most powerful expressions from the planets they represented and, at worst, evacuation vessels for the colonies. They were intended to be unique from the beginning.

Nice, I like the old series a lot better then the new and this is a cool nod to that.

Beautiful piece of work.
Am I right in thinking that BSG tos was a slight ripoff in tech terms of star wars?

I think they shared a visual effects director.

You have to understand that the original series was riding off the popularity created by Star Wars. With the way they built spaceship models back then, and laser bolts being the weapon of choice, of course people are going to assume it's a rip-off. Had Star Wars not been as popular as it was, BSG wouldn't have been green-lit.

'Ripoff' I feel is too strong a word. The visual effects were similar but the story took different directions from the ones Star Wars did. Those who write TOS BSG off as a 'rip off' of Star wars aren't looking at the greater picture.

I'm not saying that BSG was a rip just some of the tech. That's why I like nBSG. Well the first series and most of the second.

Just a passing thought: Galactica vs A star destroyer, who would win?

Since classic BSG didn't have the benefit of hundreds of analysts making guesses about the ship's firepower, it's hard to guess. I always presumed the classic Battlestar could stand toe-to-toe with a Star Destroyer and slug one another into a stalemate. If we figure the Galactica had the same huge anti-ship missiles that the Pegasus did (and if they flew that fast) then things might have been in the Galactica's favor.

And since it seems classic vipers were more manuverable than TIE fighters, we can also guess the colonials would have the upper hand in air combat. If that playstation game is also any indication, Vipers have shields.

There is no contest in the new series though- Star Destroyer all the way. As much of a following as the new Pegasus has, it's scrap when fighting a Star Destroyer. Star Destroyer turbolaser bolts have been measured in the kiloton when describing their destructive firepower. If a SD is designed to dish out and sustain that level of damage for a prolonged fight, even the nukes from the Pegasus would only be fireworks.

In the end it all depends on who's writing the thing. A nBSG fan might contort the story so that the Pegasus wins, even if it's fighting the Executor. I just thought the classic Galactica had more in common with the Star Destroyers than the new version... one of the reasons why I like the classic battlestars over the new ones. At least the classic ones shared the same kind of monolithic menace the Star Destroyers did. The new Peggy comes close, but it's still lacking something.

I think it depends on the type of SD. The Galactica is quite likely to kill an Imperator 1 SD, but up against a ISD 2 the Galactica would have a hard time.

With the fighter subject it depends on who has the most fighters.

I reckon a turbo laser round would go straight through the new BSG battlestars like a pencil through paper

There is a way the new Pegasus could defeat the executor. It could try and ram the bridge or fly vipers into the bridge like in RoTJ where the single A-wing took out the entire SSD by smashing into the bridge

I was never enough of a fan to distinguish between the two versions of the Star Destroyer in any way except visually. I just believe that with her turbolaser armament, armor, and fighter compliment, the Classic Galactica was a match for a Star Destroyer- weather the Galactica had shields or not. The original looked heavy and armored enough to look as if it's survived a long period of time. Can't say the same for the new design.

It would make common sense to assume the Executor would win in any contest between the two sagas, but writers like Moore can twist facts and reality to accommodate whatever they desire. Maybe they can dramatically kill off a bit character to destroy a part of the Executor's bridge. Or maybe the Galactica suddenly has some experimental superbeam that was never mentioned or alluded to before.

Writers have the power of plot to make whatever changes they wish, but there are limits. When you create a universe and set a tone, some expectations come with it. If you cross the line and break those expectations, you can get cries of "Bullshit!" from the audience.

I had such a reaction when the missile launchers spontaneously appeared over the Algae planet on the new design- despite being conspicuously absent in the stock shots of the ship. nBSG was hailed to be 'more realistic' than the original, but this little stunt proved Moore wasn't so serious about maintaining that claim.
