Colonial Viper by Norsehound Colonial Viper by Norsehound
A little underwhelming given the scale I've presented for the Battlestars, but there it is. I wanted to go with the triangular form again since 3 is a sacred number among many religions and perhaps had it's origins 'out there'. I didn't like the new vipers actually- they look more like classic cars with oversized cockpit bubbles over the buisness-y look of the original designs.

Anyway? Vipers, in my take on Galactica.

"Viper" is the name given to the class of fighters that are capable of operating in space, in the air, and traversing between the two. The first vipers were quad-engined and sluggish, but the newest interceptors are actually quite sophisticated. Most pilots call their craft "Vipers", but there are sub-class names for the various types since the beginning of the cylon war ("Starhound" is the current production version). They're also given color designations for reporting purposes (a nod to Richard Hatch's take on things- these Vipers are "Azure" types).

Pretty early on the Colonials realized that they couldn't match the Cylon fighters in terms of firepower and durability, so they went the opposite direction. Colonial Vipers are blindingly fast and incredibly maneuverable. Shields give them an additional edge over the seemingly expendable Cylon raiders. Though the Azure interceptors sacrifice missile armament for speed, other Viper variants exist that retain that capability.

I think you are talking about the mark 7 viper from the BSG 2003 series. I never really liked them myself because they looked way too much like a toy. And they relied far too much on fly by computer and data links. When the cylons came back and hacked the colonial networks, that's all she wrote. Your designs seems to be a split between the TOS and the 2003 versions. BTW... what do you think about a viper influenced by the F22?

Good design, though I prefer a larger fighter, with greater payload (bombs, missiles, gun pods) and range (fuel capacity). Better to seize the initiative and attack a basestar from long-range, than to launch point interceptors when the enemy is already within spitting range, due to a small fighter's limited range and endurance.

I'd like to see your take on the raiders...the vipers definitly have the "mostly engine" interceptor look.

Maybe someday I will but my head isn't anywhere near BSG at the moment

I love this take on the Vipers. Would have loved to see the Sagittarian craft in action.

Splendid work!

They look more like heavy fighters than the interceptors you've described them as, but I like this take on the old style Vipers none the less.

Mm, definitely one of the better designs. Very reminiscent of the "fan" design from the image you linked me the other day.
