The "FX-21" "Spade" Space superiority fighter is the first generation of Hiigaran spacecraft to utilize lessons learned from studying progenitor artifacts and derelicts. This new technology, coupled with the demands for an atmosphere-space heavy fighter, resulted in the creation of the FX-21.

The design underwent several changes before the "A" version was rolled out. It was turned down by several fleet captains, but found popularity in the 15th Fleet as a missile bus and counterpart to the Vaygr Missile corvette. The FX-21B, pictured here, was the result of several changes. After which, the FX-21B was redesignated "FA-21B", reflecting it's joint Fighter-Attack craft designation.

The FA-21B's strong counterpart is found in the Taiidani Type 38 "Warthog" heavy fighter. While the FA-21B "Spade" has higher speed and larger payload, the Type 38 is an assault fighter with a better turning radius and heavier kinetic cannon.

----------

Originally proposed to the PDS mod team, my first attempt to model the craft was feeble, and the design turned over to someone else. That modeler butchered the design and made a completely separate vehicle than the design pictured here. The FX-21 never made it into the mod.

After feedback from the Relicnews forum members, the more-or-less final design is presented here. Also pictured are the Hiigaran Interceptor and Somtaaw Acolyte- reflecting the main fighters of the Hiigaran navy in the past 100 years (missing is the Blade Interceptor).

I enjoy how it fits with HW2 design style, instead of countering it. This unit appears to be roughly the size of a bomber, even approaching the bulk of a corvette in it's engine compartment. With such width and height it might proove difficult to store inside a carrier, but once "outside" those factors could help it. By spreading its manuvering thrusters further away from its center of mass it can probably roll quickly out of incoming fire. I doubt this would always work, but it could help it survive to reach attack position, and even to get away.
I always thought the Acolyte should have made use of these physics.
