Homeworld = entirely original.
Homeworld was inspired by the 1978 Galactica series, so that's where the similarity comes in. Relic couldn't to BSG, so they set out on their own path and so we have Hw1.
Hw2 was rushed, but the concept artwork considered during production speaks of a much deeper, richer game.

the PDS team wanted me to make a map, so I set out in an attempt to make something for them. Creative differences between their ideas and mine of the Homeworld universe forced me to leave the team for creative freedom.
Then I translated the map to vector graphics, made some changes from the PDS map, and created this. Most of the 'new' nations of the Galactic council are off-the-cuff for me and are inspired from mythology and ancient history, as Homeworld and it's inspiration Battlestar Galactica were.
We at Relic's forums also hope for a Homeworld 3. I'm told my map was pitched as a concept for an MMORTS. While I don't support MMO-anything, It would be nice if somehow my map made it's way into canon.
It's already gained the attention of relic proper, and even made fourth place in Relic's Biggest Fan contest when it wasn't even complete.
