I was asked recently to re-create the map on the front of the legendary Guidestone for the Homeworld Universe. I was rather touched that I seem to be some kind of cartographic guru for the Homeworld universe. I'm ashamed to say I didn't have it. So I went ahead and did it in an evening.
There are some minor differences from the "real" guidestone map, but you can chalk it up to being an affordable replica
A thing to note: On the original guidestone image, there's damage across the left side of the map, obscuring most of the graphic showing the Homeworld system. I have re-created this, using information from the loading screen maps to represent the inner parts of the Homeworld system and gauge, through the orbital paths on the Guidestone, where the planets were in the system. I would gather it's the most accurate representation anyone's cared to make of the Homeworld system other than the creators themselves.
That was the original inspiration, but another fan pointed out that the star background used in the HW1 maps is actually a composite, with the whirlpool being a base of sorts.
Ah! I fondly rember that guid stone, when I was a teenager I wondered what the missing parts of the map might contain. Now that I think about it, its pretty obvious that it describes the homeworld system. Ironically they only needed the general direction that the stone provided for them to find their homeworld rather then the long trek they expected it to be of searching millions of star systems for their specific planet.
