M1 Augudis by Norsehound M1 Augudis by Norsehound
In the 2470s, the United Earth Peace Corps was at a state of war with LUNAR, the colonies on the moon. The forces of Earth, it is said, would stop at nothing to crush the resistance forces that defied total rule of the Earth and engendered dissent on the earth against the 'benevolent' rule of the unified government.

Many, many conventional weapons were developed to aid in the proposed invasion of the lunar surface, but hardly anyone knew of the /unconventional/ efforts of the UEPC to conquer the moon. Nuclear and Kinetic bombardments were out of the question since the Moon had anti-space capability and would just thwart the attempt by shooting down the projectiles. What hardly anyone knew were the existence of other super-destructive weapons that were largely forgotten since the Third World War.

It was during that destructive period that a leading high-energy scientist, dismayed and jaded, conjured up a theory which would produce highly unstable energy in a coherent form. As it could not produce any lasting energy and it was impossible to store, it had no application for a power source but could be capable as a weapon. It was never developed during the Third World War, as more resources went to conventional weapons. The UEPC re-discovered the formula however, and sought to put it into some kind of active deployment.

Very little of this hypothetical project reached the public eye. A massive project was proposed to the United Earth senate for a "Construction complex" allegedly designed as a super-crane. The disappearance of several leading physicists was reported over the span of nine years, and it is thought the crackdown at Palifca also had something to do with what conspiracy theorists call "The Big Gun".

According to rumors and popular conspiracy theory, the massive platform was designed to be a mobile fortress. Armed with a pair of these high-energy bombardment cannons, it would roam across a continent and re-position itself to prevent counter-battery fire from the moon. It would fire bolts from earth at the moon, and these bolts of pure energy (in a vacuum) would make craters on the moon the size of newfoundland island. As they were pure energy they would be impossible to intercept. Initially it was supposed to have many significant self-defense batteries as well, but cost and weight cuts diminished the arsenal down to four experimental particle beam cannons- each capable of vaporizing a city block. Had it been deployed, it would have been accompanied by a Battalion of Axels for close defense purposes.

It is debatable whether such a weapons platform was even possible, let alone constructed. Then, as now, true tall-scale "mecha" were largely ornamental and hardly practical given the realities of conventional warfare. Power concerns were another problem as well, and it's thought the unit would have to be connected to a local power grid in order to charge and fire its main weapons. Then again, like the ancient Bombard cannons and the super tanks of the second World War, such massive weapons platforms have been deployed in the past.

Popular rumor calls this monster weapon the M1 Augudis, and it would have been constructed in San Francisco in the American Continent. Although such a massive weapon would be obvious to spot during construction, it is suspected that the mecha was actually assembled underwater in the bay itself. The fact that the SF Bay was the site of a massive 'excavation project' for ruins from the Third World War has kept this rumor alive. It is still unclear if this monster was constructed, or its current whereabouts. Ironic given a machine so big.

(Drawn up for the MechaDesigner's contest challenge #2: The one that shouldn't exist. It's been a while since I visited the Agitator universe as well, so I decided that the UEPC would be flexing it's WORLD DOMINATION muscles in doing something crazy. And yes, it's a homage to another design of mine... I figured I'd work it into the Axel saga since somehow the ARX machines got in there too *shrug*

By the way in case it wasn't clear, that little smidge between my signature and the M1's right foot is a KR-14A. The line next to that is a person).

Well.  It's obvious where this got its inspiration, but I love it anyways.  Very nice.

Reminds me of a Koenig Monster from Macross. Which isn't a bad thing mind you. But thats the first thing I thought of.

How long does it take you to normally do these? I really wanna try do one some day, I have a great imagination when drawing robots and ships, they just never come out the way I want them to. :|

An hour or two? I never really time how long it takes. I start with a rough sketch, then clean up the lines before coloring and shading on a different layer. Someday I want to use 3D to enhance my drawings (for better proportions), but I'm not that good yet.

Same with me about the 3D part, when I started using Photoshop CS4, I set a goal for what I tried to do. I would try attempt it first, than do some other things to practice. Than i would get better and better, than I would be able to do my goal. I think you should try that.

Really, an hour? you should time yourself, see how long it takes you.

Well, you can say inspiration comes from Macross yes... It wasn't a conscious 'rip off'. 'Sides, it's a one-off design that might not have even been built 'officially' in the universe *shrug*.

If you want to get technical though, the main guns of both the Macross and the M1 function differently with different visual effects. Wheras the Macross is one giant Wave Motion Tuning Fork (go look it up on TVtropes for examples), each of the barrage barrels here fires a bolt of light. Visually the charge would have been high blasts of steam/plasma/electricity coming out of the silvery vents, whereas the Macross fires lightning bolts between the prongs to charge. The M1 is also far more destructive than the Macross was, even at a smaller scale.

I wasn't implying that it was a rip off, I more merely making an observation of the similarities. But I can see the inspiration in the design.

Would a scaled down version be possible in the setting? something 1.3 times bigger than a kelleg at most? If possible that might make a useful heavy weapons axel which is kind of ironic since technically any axel carrier super heavy weapons by common soldier standards.

The artillery cannons won't work at a smaller scale. All the machinery to generate the bolts, focus them, and fire them need to be that big. Ironically, even at this size it's dubious it would work. In-universe scientists propose that a much larger, self-powering platform would be a more ideal artillery weapon. As it is the M1 is still dependent on outside power sources to be 100% effective.

With that response I assume it is,to some degree, self sufficient. Should we expect fireworks from it in that state? Or is it barely capable of moving around without external help?
Reply
:iconnorsehound:
Norsehound Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2010
It can move on it's own. I didn't express it, but the design also has 'wheel feet' to let it roll along the ground without risking use of the legs- really these guns should have been on tank treads. But Axels have unparalleled mobility over conventional tanks, so the legs were put up instead. It can walk on it's own, but there's a reason why it also has an experimental balancing mechanism.

Fireworks in the state? Well, it wouldn't be met with international fanfare... the proposed plan was that it would just roam around anonymously through low-density areas. When it came to firing, power cables would be run out to it's position and hooked up.

The bottom line is that it can move (slowly) on its own, but to fire it needs an external power source. The plan drafters would have recommended a larger, heavier platform for complete self-sufficiency, possibly with the ability to go out to sea or to make it into space. Their proposal would have been a true Mobile Fortress, but such a thing was beyond the scope of what the UEPC had in mind at the time. They wanted a walking super-artillery gun, not a mobile field base (since they owned all of the earth).

The UEPC operates defense satellites of their own- any rocks would be vaporized. The moon can't hope to stop projectiles of pure energy. This is of course assuming the weapon was possible.

Nice! Hopefully the defense sats can take down a really large incoming rock.

I have worked on a similar vehicle. I decided that it had to move fast and hard once it fired, the better to avoid high-kinetic-energy retaliatory fire. Better yet, targeting on-the-fly would be preferable, since it's harder to hit a moving target.

Your design is an excellent variant on the Monster. It would fit just as easily in the Macross/Robotech universe as a next-gen design! Great work!

Macross doesn't have anything remotely close to this I'd think. Though given the crazyness of some of the recent sequels (Uh... spirita energy?) I'd think my device isn't weird enough. :\

The moon doesn't really have much of a space presence- the UEPC operates a few inter-system frigates that can pretty much intercept anything shot out of the moon via railgun.

I'm glad Luna lacks much of a retaliatory force in your work. It's just that I'd be very nervous about anyone who had the capability of dropping a big (over 50 ft diameter) rock on me...

As far as Macross is concerned, my comment goes more to the machines' primary design. As you know, the Destroid Monster is a standard. That said, mounting a weapon equivalent to the Macross main cannon is NOT a standard.^_^ Such a design did rear its head in "Robotech - The Sentinels" with their "land-Macross" vehicle. Understand that my statement was not a slam against your work. The Monster is one of the greatest under-utilized designs I can think of, and I appreciate anyone who has the courage to use it as a springboard for original designs.

Things are kinda hard to do on the moon, what with no air and all. Even if the moon really wanted to pummel the earth with rail-launched asteroids, the UEPC would likely notice and have some kind of focused reaction to stop it. Really, LUNAR wants to be left alone. It's Earth that are making all the fuss of taking over the breakaway 'resistance' states. LUNAR is largely a defensive force since they have enough problems (of surviving in a vacuum) on their own.

Not sure if I'd call the Monster under-utilized, since it's the only Destroid to have repeated stardom beyond Macross (as the VB-6 Koing Monster). Still, I knew I wanted to mount this weapons system on an axel-like machine and this was more or less the result. Btw- where's this 'Land Macross' you speak of? Google wouldn't cough it up and now I'm curious. Was it ever illustrated? Or is it another pirated design like many of the mecha in Robotech are these days?

Well, the inspiration vein of Macross can be traced going into this, though it's nowhere near as big or as armed.

Oddly, it's arguably more destructive since the Macross bow-cannon couldn't make craters the sizes as big.
