In episode 5, after Hibiki hears about women using the van-types and flips out accordingly, there's a small montage set in the platform displaying the 'modified' vanguards. Six are displayed here, and there are some more, but those are simple gradient and color repaints. These represent the most gaudy of the examples.

And because of the way the camera angles are set, we don't see all the surfaces of the custom vanguards. I've drawn what I could see and left the rest to base coloring.

It's never said who would use these custom Vanguards of course, nor does it mention how many vanguards were left on the Ichazuchi. Most of the compliment launched during the battle in the first episode, but a number were forced to remain due to technical difficulties on the launch tubes. Supposedly these (and at least one command type) were left behind for the women to scavange.

Interestingly enough, in one of the opening credits previews (all opening credits are supposed to show sequences from the episode) shows Vanguards riding Dreads. This is even on one of the soundtrack covers. This never happened in the animation, but one can wonder if the Vanguards were supposed to play a bigger role in the series than they ultimately did.

There's even more versions than what I've posted so far though, but the graphics for them are not yet complete.

Awesome work on these! The only one I can remember was the one that had the stars painted on it.

It was funny how they painted all those vanguards up but, only 3 got used (Jura's, Barnette's, Dita's). Meia used one in the default Tarak colors. I guess all those painted vanguards were just left in the hangar. No more was ever said about them. Too bad we didn't get to see Dita use that weird thing on her vanguards arm in that episode.

No, Meia's was a repaint unless all "Command versions" came that way. Since her colors fit the colors of her Dread (like the way it does for the other Mejere pilots) I'm presuming it's a recolor.

Again, I wish they could have done more with the Vangaurds. I guess like other 'grunt mechs' they were destined to be disposed of even by the plot.
