It's been a while since I used my digital painting skills (or drew a robot). So rather than another Kelleg variant I worked on weeks ago, I threw this together instead.
Yes, I know, I should be drawing more *normal* things like people, landscapes, cars, and other ordinary things because who would hire me for drawing robots and stuff?
Oh, wait, maybe the /japanese/ would. How many of those Mechanical designers were forced to draw teacups or ordinary people to get to where they are today?
Sometimes I wonder if I was born in the wrong country, since "Mechanical Designer" is a recognized term in the entertainment industry over there. It seems over here you're either identified as a "character artist" or an "environment artist". I excel at machines and mechanical objects, yet it doesn't fit into either category! I can sit and in ten minutes concept machines, but I struggle in the other areas! Gah!
Ah well. Versatility is what I suppose are demanded of artists here, so I understand why. It's just disappointing in that I have so much talent a mechanical concept artist, but no immediate application possible here.
Though I wonder what would happen if I put together a portfolio of my mecha and spaceships and sent it over to a few Japanese animation studios over there. Y'think any of them would bite? Just a thought
The Glaug is from Macross, btw. This is too exotic and alien of a version to pass off as a Marauder, and too original to be a Robotech version
isnt robottech and macross same O.o, also nice design and lol at the Oh, wait, maybe the /japanese/ would. How many of those Mechanical designers were forced to draw teacups or ordinary people to get to where they are today? comment lol
Robotech has a number of differences. The whole saga is three anime series spliced together for the sake of episode length- changing the narrative with it. Most Robotech detractors akin this to piracy, and the situation is even worse when Harmony Gold blocks all pure-Macross related material from reaching the states (instead, foisting their Robotech products on us). Comparing the two series, I like Macross better. It isn't as goofy and it's closer to the source. Some like Robotech better, but I'm not one of them.
Well, regarding what I said earlier, I could be very, very wrong -- it's been a few years, after all -- so don't take what I say as anything like word of god. I agree with you that 'mechanical designer' is something that there should be more of over here. You really ARE a good mechanical designer, and I'd like to see you get work that builds on that strength. Maybe you can leverage the lack of them over here into a niche for you.
There used to be a site called conceptart.com, I don't know if it's still a clearing house of graphics and mechanical design stuff, or even if you already know of it. If it can help, cool!
Not only does it speak of an alien origin, but in a way it connects the Zjentohlauedy to War of the Worlds and the invading tripods in that saga
