When somtaaw finally made it into space, there were early concerns that they would have to fight to stay there. Although there were never any serious threats by the other Kiithid to seize or destroy the Explorer ships away from Hiigaran protection, this early paranoia planted the seed for on-hand Somtaaw super capital designs. From this, the destroyer was born.
The finalized Destroyer design was the result of a choice for Somtaaw: Either emulate the current "standard" destroyer- which had proven to be a reliable and well-rounded design, or surpass it. Though command decided to make their destroyer an equal to the Skaal-Tel, the unavailability of the ion cannons meant the design had to compromise for another weapons system... which lead to other deviations in the design.
The destroyer design was shelved shortly after it's completion for a number of reasons- foremost among them being the fact that Somtaaw did not want to advertise the fact that they had a destroyer design. A second was that they didn't want to make it seem as if the Kiithid was militarizing itself and thus incur action from the Daiimid against their 'militia fleet' (since Somtaaw had a number of benefits and exceptions for being a 'mere mining kiith'. Militarizing the fleet would break some standing agreements).
When circumstances forced Somtaaw to put the Destroyer into use, the design had to be reviewed and modernized before put into production. The "Standard" variant of the destroyer is armed with torpedoes- a reliable system given that the torpedo payload can be altered for a number of uses.
So the torpedos are corvette sized...hmm, with that size difference you could produce a support variant that would probably be the most annoying ship to fight if it is anywhere near as dangerous as the support frigates in the original game.
I very much like the Somtaaw designs you have; the stern sections in particular look very no-nonsense, industrial, and built without much concern for what it looks like. This is what made me like the Taiidan small-craft designs in HW1.
Cataclysm had a ot going for it, but there were a few weird things going on with it. I think I like your ideas better!
but its very cool
I agree with Caraig; substance over style wins.
