The Tsukumo-version Standard Van-type fighter from the anime Vandread. This is the Tarak standard one-man combat unit. Given my love for throwaway grunt mecha, it should be no surprise that I've drawn one.

Back when I first got into Vandread I wondered about setting out to do a 'mechanics file' of standardized drawings depicting all the machines in Vandread. I'm not saying I'm going to set out to do that, but I may decide to draw up the various Vanguards seen during the series. There were quite a few repaints...

I'm been thinking about making a fanfic between Vandread and Robotech, but I'm missing some things for it to work. Like what are the stats. on a vanguard? Like how tall is it?

I haven't seen any official statistics for the Vanguards, at least from any english sources. I can't recall any Japanese sources that I've seen either.

I can tell you they are smaller than a Valkyrie... a full grown adult is about the size of the forward chest vent. They are also not powered by alien flowers, if that helps.

If I had to guess, I'd say that a Vanguard should be about 30 feet tall. A normal Valkyrie can be between 40 to 44 feet tall in it's battloid mode. Not to mention it moves far more gracfully.

Considering we've never seen these vanguards in the hands of veteran pilots, it's hard to judge how combat capable they are. It could be that, like all mecha painted brown, they're supposed to be ineffective and die in vast numbers. Then again, so did every Stock VF-1A in the brown paint scheme too.

Yeah. But even then those VF-1A's could deffinetaly do better than those Vanguards.

Alright, I think I got enough about the Vanguards. Do you know anything about the Dreads?

Not unless you get a vanguard in the hands of an ace with the right equipment.

Vanguards... Modular fighters. The most common unit is the cabin pod with the forward rim attached... typically come with two repeater cannons. No dreads seem standard except for the naval Mejere models, which are in pure white and come in the above configuration.

When you say repeater cannons you mean lasers right? And they can't function in atmosphere like normal jets can right? Just in space.

I mean repeaters, which shoot light bolts like an autocannon. Meia's dread (before it was pexis modified) also had a kind of energy missile as well, though I don't know if that's standard equipment.

I've seen nothing to suggest dreads can't work in an atmosphere either. So can Vanguards, but after using elaborate deployment mechansims.

It will defeat those evil Mejere and their high speed starfighters with it's blistering array of elbow mounted melee weaponry! And MANLINESS!

Pretty much.

Vanguards come with a ton of options but we hardly see them being used before they all got replaced by the newer versions at the end of the show.

One has to wonder if Vanguard effectiveness was really a thing of hype or if they were capable in the right hands. Hibiki's custom aside, the only time we've seen them used in actual battle was by trainees who were rushed in without preparation.
