Warhammer Redux by Norsehound Warhammer Redux by Norsehound
To mix things up, instead of the 3/4 plan view I normally do for machines, how about some portrayals of action while showing off the new design?

Although it seems the owners of Battletech got the OK to use the images for the "Unseen" (Ripped-off designs from various anime), I wanted to try redesigning the Unseen as I would have liked them.

So... the WHM-6R Warhammer. Done with the thinking that this would be a BW illustration for a Technical manual.

You did a really nice job on the physics and weight of the Warhammer. Really like your smooth concept design on this.

I never did understand why they kept the giant flashlight yet never had stats for it, just some silly rule that mentioned the mech by name. Of course the anime-editions had plenty of oddities I guess. The curved look here is pretty interesting though.

The spotlight takes up no weight, no crits (I think) and just negates the dusk/nighttime penalties on the board.

I learned recently that all of the Battledroids/1rst Edition Battletech mechs basically had the stats made to conform to the pirated artwork. That's how some of the designs ended up being so whacked out (and why the Warhammer has so many auxiliary guns).

Correct, in the tech readout the spotlight has no weight, critical slots, in fact I'm pretty sure it's not even mentioned in the entire book. It really would have been easy to alter the designs slightly but there was no QA between the artists and the guys writing the rules and stats. Which is why a Locust can torso twist to face you and punch you with both arms. I just sort of wish they had rules and artwork meant to work together...and maybe easier to demo rules.

Nice re-imagining of an old standby. I kinda have to wonder what's off camera making the big boy scoot like that.

It wasn't ripped off. The guys in Japan gave the goahead... later the guys in America said no, and there was a massive legal furball. No one is really sure what happened, but they wernt allowed to use the unseens in the art.

Now, apparently, they are. Hoorah!

Actually the group in Japan that sold the abilities to use the designs were later ruled in court to never have owned them. After Harmony Gold bought them and still claims to own them outside of Japan...the mystery I think is if they really do or not. Though from what I read supposedly the infringing art was ruled in favor of FASA in a court case but after the legal fees dropped the images for safety. Can't say I feel sorry for them though, should have had artists build original designs to begin with. :)

well whatever the case, the Tomahawk came first, and then the Warhammer based off that. I wasn't aware of the legal situation surrounding it, but I always assumed it wasn't an authorized deal. Kinda like LAMs and their derivatives, which is why LAMs don't really exist anymore.

*shrug*

LAMs were allowed to... Its just that no one knows how to use them. They always use them as suicide sleds.

And they die easy... ish. I'd like to see a comeback personally.

Part of me is still curious about the rules regarding LAMs. My first exposure to them was in the book "Freebirth"... and I was quite surprised to learn later that they were copies of the VF series from Macross!

My last exposure to the series as a player for the boardgame was realy in 99'. Ever since then (at least with WizKids) they seem to have revamped some concepts of the game and changed others (Airships as a new unit class, and revamping infantry and vehicles). Part of me wouldn't be surprised if LAMs returned, but another part of me would be because LAMs were so controversial for a long time. Then again so were the 'Unseen', and despite the 'Reseen' series, we've gotten the originals officially now.

So... I dunno :\

Maybe we will get them in MW5... it is 3015 after all, and there is bound to be plenty of Lostech ^.^

The mechanics are going to be terrible to figure out how to transform the thing.

Besides, I think most of the LAMs went extinct in the first succession war. Any existing after that would be too precious to waste on a trival conflict.

House Kurita was still manufacturing Stinger LAMS (VF-1A Valkyries for you Macorss fans) until shortly before the Clan invasion. House Marik also had a nice stockpile of Phoenix Hawk LAMs (Super VF-1S Valkyries) back around 3025.

This is the third time I've been directed to that trailer.

That trailer's part of the reason why I'm doing these redesigns.
